SALT LAKE CITY (May 28, 2014) – The Utah Jazz is hosting auditions for the 2014-15 America First Jazz Dancers at the Zions Bank Basketball Center starting Saturday, July 12. The auditions are open to high school graduates age 18 years and older. An optional preparation opportunity, the sixth annual Jazz Dancer Boot Camp, will be conducted on Monday, June 16 through Saturday, June 21.  Pre-registration for the camp is open now with a discounted fee offered to those who sign up by Sunday, June 1.

“The America First Jazz Dancers are an integral part of the Jazz organization, not only providing fan entertainment but also serving as role models and community ambassadors,” said Meikle Lahue, Utah Jazz director of game operations. “The dance team is well-known for its high-energy performances at Jazz home games and a variety of events throughout the Salt Lake community.”

The 2014-15 America First Jazz Dancers auditions will feature a preliminary round and first cuts on Saturday, July 12.  All semi-finalists will be required to submit a two-minute video by midnight on July 14 and attend evening workouts on July 14 and 15.  Finalists will be notified on July 16 and invited to participate in the final round of auditions on Thursday, July 17.

The Jazz Dancer Boot Camp is an optional six-day fitness camp designed to get aspiring Jazz Dancers into shape and ready for the auditions.  The camp features morning and evening workouts taught by GPP fitness instructor Neil Anderson and Jazz Dancers Director Jan Whittaker.  Sessions will be held at Bountiful High School and GPP Fitness in Centerville.

Registration forms and additional information for both the auditions and the boot camp are available online at

The America First Jazz Dancers add an exciting entertainment element to Utah Jazz basketball. The team, which has been in existence since the 1992-93 season under the direction of Whittaker, is made up of 20 dancers who rotate to provide 14 dancers at each Jazz home game.  The dance team performs a minimum of two times per game and holds two four-hour practices each week. Their style is athletic and energetic and features a variety of jazz, funk and character-type dance routines. In addition to performing at Jazz home games, the America First Jazz Dancers make community and charitable appearances, including school assemblies, hospital visits and fundraising events.
