STHs Have a Bowl with Udrih and Williams

written by: Ray Lin

It's obvious that Beno Udrih has a lot of skill on the basketball court. In the bowling lanes, however, it may be a different story.

Monday, the Kings point guard joined rookie forward Shelden Williams at the Strikes Family Fun Center in Rocklin for “Bowling With The Kings."

Udrih began by bowling a 131 to win the first game of the night. Afterward, he brushed off the resounding victory against the three friends who accompanied him to the event as simply “beginner’s luck.”

While that might’ve been the case, there’s no disputing that the luckiest people in Strikes’ private party room were the 20 Kings Season Ticket Holders on-hand for the fun-filled event.

“I’m glad to see the Kings doing this for the Season Ticket Holders,” Strikes' corporate events coordinator Bobby Ruiz said. “It’s a nice little private room where you can spend a little quality time with a couple players. They really get to be up-close to them, talk to them and have them sign autographs.”

Among the amenities in the private room were four bowling lanes, a generous platter of appetizers, leather couches and a photo booth where fans were able to take souvenir pictures with Udrih and Williams.

“I think events like this help people realize that they’re not just players, they’re regular people too,” longtime Season Ticket Holder Sharon Hatch of Roseville said. "We really enjoy meeting the players. I just told (Udrih) that we enjoy the Kings through the good times and the bad and we’re happy he’s here.”

If the enthusiasm from the event was any indication, the support between Kings fans and the players is mutual.

“It’s always great to give back to the community and hang out with the fans, so that they know we’re not just basketball players,” Udrih said smiling. “We’re people who do normal stuff too.”

“It’s fun to come out here and interact with the fans that come out to games and support us,” Williams said. “It’s a good chance to get to meet these people.”

After interacting with the fans, the players returned to the lanes where neither claimed any sort of skill close to that which they possess on the hardwood.

“I’m not going to say I’m not good, but I’m ok,” Udrih said poised for another strong game.

“I’m alright,” Williams said. “I haven’t bowled in awhile, probably since summer. I’m pretty rusty.”

Fortunately for them and the fans, it’s a whole different story on the basketball court.
