On Saturday, July 27 nationally recognized entertainer and slight of hand expert David Magee undertook a daring 6.5 mile drive while completely blindfolded in a brand new Ford Thunderbird, provided by Jerry Reynolds of Prestige Ford, with
Mark Cuban as his passenger.
The event started out at the Whataburger in Rowlett, with Cuban signing autographs and taking pictures with the patrons at the restaurant. At noon, preparations for the drive began. A referee duct taped Cuban's mouth shut to prevent him from helping Magee out during the drive and Magee had a blindfold and hood placed over his head to prevent him from being able to see.
Magee followed a carefully mapped out route from Rowlett to Garland. He performed the Blind Drive Challenge using simple rote memory techniques, similar to the ones that visually impaired people use to get around. After hundreds of practice runs, David saw the 5-way Centerville-Kingsley-Broadway intersection as a huge challenge. Magee had to plan every step of the drive, including speed and turns. He estimated their speed averaged 25-30 mph, but he could have reached 50-55 on some stretches. The biggest challenge came at the end of the route as the T-bird convertible ascended the concrete vehicle display podium.
