PROMOTION: Southwestern Bell Wireless is giving residents a chance to "Be a Hero" by teaming up with Special Olympics to raise money for the organization's year-round sports training and competitions. The "Be A Hero" campaign is supported by local sports athletes, coaches and owners, including Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks. Other participants include Joe Avezzano of the Dallas Cowboys, Mike Modano of the Dallas Stars and Rafael Palmeiro of the Texas Rangers. These sports figures will be appearing in the "Be A Hero" advertising campaign, encouraging all area residents to support Special Olympics.
DETAILS: With a $20 donation and activation of Southwestern Bell Wireless service with a two-year service agreement, contributors will receive:

The knowledge that they are supporting a worthwhile cause that provides opportunities for persons with mental retardation.
WHERE: To participate in the offer, contributors simply make a minimum donation of $20 at any of Southwestern Bell Wireless' 16 stores or participating agent locations, or call 1-800-331-0500.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS BACKGROUND: Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. Special Olympics athletes never pay any fees to participate in sports programs. Contributions are used to pay for coaching, equipment, meals, transportation, uniforms, and facilities during training and competition. Special Olympics gives participants continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.
