Mavs Acquire Eight-Time All-Star Jason Kidd
DALLAS (February 19, 2008) — The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they acquired eight-time All-Star point guard Jason Kidd, guard/forward Antoine Wright and forward Malik Allen from the New Jersey Nets in exchange for Devin Harris, Trenton Hassell, Keith Van Horn, Maurice Ager, DeSagana Diop and two first-round draft picks.
Kidd (6-4, 210) makes his return to Dallas after he was originally drafted by the Mavericks in the 1994 NBA Draft with the second overall pick. Kidd made Mavericks history in 1995 when he was named NBA Co-Rookie of the Year. During his time in Dallas, Kidd averaged 13.7 points, 8.7 assists and 5.9 rebounds in 182 games. The eight-time All-Star has started five midseason classics (1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008) and in 1996 became the first Maverick to start an All-Star Game.
Kidd, a 13-year veteran point guard, has been named All-NBA First Team five times, while making the All-Defensive Team an additional seven times. Kidd holds career averages of 14.3 points, 9.2 assists, 6.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 997 games. His 9.2 assist average ranks fifth on the NBA all-time list of assists per game behind Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Oscar Robertson and Isiah Thomas. Kidd was also a tri-captain on the gold-medal winning USA Olympic team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia and is a current member of the USA Basketball Senior Men’s National Team that will compete in the 2008 Olympics this summer in Beijing, China.
A former standout at the University of California-Berkeley, Kidd is a native of Alameda, Calif. He currently has 99 career triple-doubles and ranks third on the NBA’s all-time triple-double list after surpassing Wilt Chamberlain last season. He trails only Oscar Robertson (181) and Magic Johnson (138). His next triple-double will not only be his 100th, but it will also be his 13th this season which will be the most he has ever recorded in a single season. He registered 12 triple-doubles in 2006-07. Kidd holds a career record of 71-28 when he posts a triple-double.
Allen (6-10, 255) has seen action in 48 games this season for the Nets with 12 starts. He averages 5.4 points and 2.7 rebounds in 15.9 minutes while shooting 47.5% from the field. The six-year pro has played in Miami, Chicago and New Jersey and holds career averages of 5.9 points and 3.2 rebounds in 335 career games.
Wright (6-7, 210), a second-year swingman out of Texas A&M, was the 15th overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. This season, he is averaging 7.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 41 games with 10 starts.
