Adam Silver was appointed NBA Deputy Commissioner and COO, effective July 1, 2006, following more than eight years as President and COO, NBA Entertainment. During that time, Silver was instrumental in helping the NBA become a model for global sports marketing organizations and one of the largest providers of sports programming in the world.
Silver, who has been with the NBA for more than 14 years, oversees NBA Entertainment which comprises all of the NBA and WNBA’s business units including television, merchandising, Internet, marketing and communications, publishing, marketing partnerships, media sales, and event management, all on a global basis.
Under Silver's direction, NBA Entertainment launched NBA TV – the league’s 24-hour television channel – and developed the NBA.com network of Web sites, which includes WNBA.com, the 44 NBA and WNBA team sites and eight international sites. He oversees the NBA and WNBA's game telecasts, which are carried in 215 countries in 43 languages.
Silver is also responsible for the league’s international business activities, overseeing the operations of the NBA’s 12 offices around the globe. NBA Entertainment’s Global Merchandising Group – which is responsible for the product development, merchandising, licensing, sales development, e-commerce, retail and direct-to-consumer initiatives of the NBA and WNBA – has seen record growth during Silver’s tenure. Sales of NBA and WNBA merchandise exceeded $3 billion last year. Also under Silver’s supervision are the Global Media Properties and Marketing Partnerships divisions as well as the advertising sales within the league’s extensive media inventory. NBA and WNBA sponsor partners include market leaders such as the Coca-Cola Company, Dell, Electronic Arts, Anheuser-Busch, adidas, Reebok and Nike.
Silver was an Executive Producer of the IMAX presentation “Michael Jordan to the Max” and the Emmy Award-winning TNT documentary, “Whatever Happened to Micheal Ray?” Silver was also an Executive Producer of “Like Mike,” a Twentieth Century Fox release, which features more than 15 NBA players and the “Year of the Yao,” a highly-acclaimed documentary on NBA All-Star Yao Ming.
In addition to the numerous awards NBA Entertainment has received under his direction, including Emmy Awards and Cable Ace Awards, Silver was named in 2003 to Time Magazine’s and CNN’s list of Global Business Influentials, which features 20 of the world’s leading corporate executives. In 2005, Silver was named the 16th Most Powerful Person in Sports by The Sporting News and has appeared consistently on the publication’s 100 Most Powerful People in Sports list. Silver was named among the Most Influential in Sports Business by the Sports Business Journal, which has also honored him multiple times on its Forty Under 40 sports executives list.
Silver, 43, joined the NBA in 1992 as Special Assistant to the Commissioner. He became NBA Chief of Staff in 1993; Senior Vice President and COO, NBA Entertainment, in 1995; and then President and COO, NBA Entertainment in 1997. In 2000, NBA Entertainment and NBA Properties were reorganized, with the operations of both business units coming under his direction.
Prior to joining the NBA, he served as a litigation associate at the New York law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore, where he concentrated on media and anti-trust cases. Silver also served as a law clerk to Judge Kimba Wood at the Federal District Court in New York City.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg appointed Silver in 2003 to the New York City Sports Development Corporation. He also serves on the boards of PENCIL (an organization focused on developing civic involvement in the New York City public schools), the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and the Duke University Library. He is also a Member of the University of Chicago Law School Visiting Committee.
Silver graduated from Duke University in 1984 with an AB in Political Science and in 1988 he received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Chicago Law School. He resides in New York City.
