Coach George Karl Named Western Conference Coach of the Month for January
Denver Nuggets Head Coach George Karl was named Western Conference Coach of the Month for January, the NBA announced today.
Karl led the Nuggets to an overall record of 12-3 (.800) for the month, which was tied for the most wins in the league during January. Additionally, the 12 wins are the second most ever won in a month in Nuggets team history (won 13 in March 1982).
During the month, Karl recorded two milestones to add on to his hall-of-fame resume. With a win over Oklahoma City on Jan. 20, he moved into sixth place on the all-time NBA coaching wins list past Larry Brown and just one game later he earned his 1,100th career victory on the road at Houston on Jan. 23.
Among the 12 wins were impressive victories over the Los Angeles Clippers, which snapped an NBA-high 17-game winning streak, a win over the Lakers in L.A. on the second game of a back-to-back set and earned the tie-breaker over Golden State with a home win on Jan. 13. The Nuggets also put together their two longest winning streaks of the season during the month (won six straight from Jan. 5 to Jan. 15 and currently have a five-game streak going into tonight’s game vs. New Orleans).
This marks the 11th time that Karl has earned Coach of the Month honors during his illustrious career, including the fourth at the Nuggets’ helm (the others being February and March of 2005 and January 2010). He remains one of only three coaches in team history to win a Coach of the Month award (Doug Moe and Bernie Bickerstaff), and the first to win more than two in Nuggets history.
