New Orleans general manager Dell Demps politely declined attempts from reporters to obtain specifics and an update on the team’s situation following Thursday’s draft. Officially, the Pelicans drafted Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel with the sixth overall pick. It was a fairly significant surprise around the NBA that Noel was still on the board at 6.
“Whenever a player’s injured, sometimes he can fall,” Demps said of Noel dropping from potentially the top pick to sixth. “We had him projected pretty high. Crazy things happen on draft day.”
Demps indicated that he would provide further specifics at a future date.
“We want to upgrade the roster,” he said. “I want to thank Mr. and Mrs. Benson and the whole Benson family. They’re giving us all of the resources we need to upgrade the roster. That’s what we want to do. It’s real uncomfortable for me to be up here right now (at the post-draft press conference). I’d like to tell you guys as much as I can. I can’t speak on certain things right now. Some things are still in the mix; nothing’s been finalized. At the appropriate time, I’d love to sit down and talk to you guys, but now’s just not that time. I hope you guys can understand.”
